10. My Own DIY Kitchen Cabinets
As I mentioned earlier, we actually built our own kitchen cabinets. I chose to go with open shelving. This saved a lot of money on wood as I didn't have to frame up every cabinet.
Plus, I didn't have to waste wood for doors. I liked the way it looked like an old farm kitchen since I was able to add a set of curtains to cover under the sink. I love the rustic design in my kitchen, and I loved how we were able to remodel our whole kitchen for around $1,000.

If you have cabinets that you can still make work for your kitchen, then by all means keep them and save yourself a lot of money.
However, you can still redo them to make them more functional. You can do this by adding inserts that are able to be pulled out. We had these in my house growing up, and they made life so much easier because then nothing could hide in your cabinets. This tutorial is said to be cost efficient and helpful as well.

This is another helpful tutorial by Ana White. Again, if you have solid kitchen cabinets that can be reworked with a little paint and some new knobs, then don't take on the extra task of rebuilding your kitchen cabinets.

This is another tutorial by Ana White. It is to help you build your basic wall cabinets. She includes lots of instructions, pictures, and a shopping list.
So if you need wall cabinets, then follow along with her. She is very thorough and has tons of building experience so I'd say her instructions are a good option.

If you are reworking your kitchen cabinets, then you will need to know how to construct a sink base cabinet. The reason is because your kitchen sink has to have a place to sit.

This is the type of cabinet I have in the corner of my kitchen. It looks like the cabinets end without going into the corner.
However, instead one of the cabinets extend so you get that extra storage space in the corner. So if you like this look instead of building a corner cabinet, then you might want to consider these plans.

This cabinet would work great in a lot of corners. It is a type of cabinet that it works well to have a Lazy Susan in the corner.

If you are doing traditional style cabinets, then you might like this idea that disguises your dishwasher a little. I had never really considered disguising my dishwasher until recently. I bought a dishwasher magnet and am thrilled.
So this cabinet is another built in option that is a great way to keep your dishwasher (because that is a vital part to most kitchens) without it ruining the flow of the kitchen. The design looks pretty simple as well.

As mentioned, don't be intimidated by such a large project. You'll want to just take it one piece at a time.
However, if you don't have a lot of carpentry experience, then you might want to enlist the help of a friend that does. It might make for a few less bumps in the road during the process.
